This work draws inspiration from the life of Saint Paraskeva (Saint Petka) and the film A Cross in the Desert, directed by Hadži-Aleksandar Đurović. Her solitude in the desert becomes a metaphor for the inner passage through suffering, faith, and transformation.

The figure’s endurance is not passive, but a confrontation with the self: pride, fear, and attachment are gradually stripped away so that a more integrated identity can emerge. The white owl represents purity, intuition, and unseen protection, while the golden crab embodies pride and the hardened shell of the former self.

The green leaves symbolise God’s protection. They appear delicate and weightless, like nature, yet are strengthened with diamond dust, suggesting a resilience that is almost unbreakable.

Here, light is not the absence of suffering, but something formed through it. Wholeness emerges through surrender, endurance, and the transformation of pain into spiritual strength and a renewed sense of self.
